2008 Champion of Children

David Andrews has dedicated his career to enhancing opportunities for children and youth by strengthening families and communities. A nationally recognized researcher with significant funding from national institutions, he has served in many leadership roles at The Ohio State University, including dean of the College of Human Ecology, interim dean of the College of Education, and assistant director of OSU Extension for 4-H Youth Development.

In 2006, Dr. Andrews worked with the faculty to join two colleges at Ohio State into the College of Education and Human Ecology. The new college is one of the largest and highest ranked at Ohio State. The College is ranked 17th among graduate schools of education and 10th among such schools at public universities nationwide. As dean of the new college, Dr. Andrews emphasized the synergy between the education and human sciences faculty and how it leads to innovation in learning and living

During his tenure as dean, Dr. Andrews led Ohio State’s effort to forge meaningful and creative public/private partnerships to prepare young people for success. These partnerships are making Ohio State the first university in the nation to establish a network of lab schools in the community covering infancy through grade 12, an effort that won the Magrath/Kellogg Award for best outreach project in the region. Dr. Andrews’ dedicated work created the newly opened $10 million Schoenbaum Family Center at Weinland Park, a model learning environment serving birth through preschool children and their families; and establishment of the agreement with Columbus City Schools for the K-5 portion of the lab school to be at the Weinland Park Elementary School. With leadership from Dr. Andrews and his colleagues, the university, Battelle, and the Educational Council of Franklin County established Metro High School in August of 2006 where students grades 9 - 12 from all 16 Central Ohio school districts focus on the study of science, technology, engineering, and math. ”

As of January 1, 2008, Dr. Andrews resumed his role as professor of human development and family science to take part more fully in compelling opportunities to improve the lives of children and youth. One of his projects will be working with Battelle, which just received an $11.7M award from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to expand the concept of Metro High School to multiple new sites in Ohio.
